OSGOOD- SCHRAMM MODEL OF COMMUNICATION

It is a Circular Model, so that communication is something circular in nature

Encoder – Who does encoding or Sends the message (message originates)

Decoder – Who receives the message

Interpreter – Person trying to understand (analyses, perceive) or interpret

Note: From the message starting to ending, there is an interpretation goes on. Based on this interpretation only the message is received.

This model breaks the sender and receiver model it seems communication in a practical way. It is not a traditional model.

It can happen within our self or two people; each person acts as both sender and receiver and hence use interpretation. It is simultaneously take place e.g. encoding, interpret and decoding.

Semantic noise is a concept introduced here it occurs when sender and receiver apply different meaning to the same message. It happens mostly because of words and phrases for e.g. Technical Language, So certain words and phrases will cause you to deviate from the actual meaning of the communication.

Note: When semantic noise takes place decoding and interpretation becomes difficult and people get deviated from the actual message.

Advantage of Osgood- Schramm model of communication

  1. Dynamic model- Shows how a situation can change
  2. It shows why redundancy is an essential part
  3. There is no separate sender and receiver, sender and receiver is the same person
  4. Assume communication to be circular in nature
  5. Feedback – central feature.

Disadvantage of Osgood- Schramm model of communication

This model does not talk about semantic noise and it assume the moment of encoding and decoding.

Should also put conclusions and references if possible

good information but brief ,,, need some more……… but yah good for having concept

  • George November 29, 2010, 2:38 am

What about adding more features of this model of communication?

  • Onesmo December 8, 2010, 1:08 pm

There s great need for more clarification about semantic noises..

  • Patrick December 16, 2010, 2:12 am

More limitations of the model… thanks for the information

  • gurach December 23, 2010, 6:53 am

    i was looking 4 it

  • deng January 12, 2011, 8:12 am

the semantic noises need more light.Good research but do more.Thanks.

  • deng January 12, 2011, 8:21 am

you said semantic noise occurs when sender and receiver put different meaning to the same message. How then does the same person contradict his own message and have different meaning 4 same message?

  • admin January 13, 2011, 9:00 am

Thanks for all your comments. Btw, with respect to Deng’s comment, Semantic noises occur when the intended message is wrongly conveyed, like, the wrong usage of words or phrases in inappropriate context which might result in giving out some other meaning which is not even intended. Rather, contradictions would be there on a message to be conveyed but its different meanings should be used at the right place in appropriate context and so no semantic noises occur.

Thanks a lot,I actually analyzed the Semantic Noises occurance and i understood it.However you helped explain better. There could be wrong interpretation of the message as it comes back to the sender, creating semantic noises.

    Thanks for the summarized notes…..Regards

cite practical example where in the SCHRAMM model of Communication is used practically in everyday life of all members within a society whether local, national or world wide setting that a student, professionals, businessmen, eliterate etc. is involved.

..i reported this model, in our class, and reading this explanation helps me more to understands this modern communication model, as the author said.but the same with the other comments semantic noise here is not discussed broader..it focused only in words…in conversation we must also consider those nonverbal action of a person.

  • Nora April 2, 2011, 11:19 am

    good and to the point

  • becky April 24, 2011, 12:44 am

well ithink this model is agood one

  • mohsin May 4, 2011, 9:43 pm

    Explain sementic noise more…..

  • dzimiri corny June 5, 2011, 3:09 pm

this model is good and simple.it gives a reader the clear view of the communication between, people.awesome one1!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Nightmare June 16, 2011, 11:41 am

    thats good

  • Husnain June 26, 2011, 1:03 pm

Em a student of communication studies, OSGOOD- SCHRAMM MODEL OF COMMUNICATION model presented here in a very good manners a student can easily understand it like me 🙂

  • sum July 17, 2011, 2:23 pm

thanks admin for the good explanation about semantic noise, it helped me a lot in doing my assignment.. nice one. thank you..

  • LAGAT SHARON August 3, 2011, 2:09 pm

I agree that semantic noise can change way of communication

  • kei August 15, 2011, 9:31 am

    Can you give concrete exampleS?
And why not try to incorporate it with a movie..

  • francis September 13, 2011, 11:30 am

    good and well explained

  • ludovick September 19, 2011, 11:52 am

    How about semantic noise

  • obare edward October 3, 2011, 7:25 pm

am impressed of this resourceful information kudos to whoever analysed it to us

  • Goden Marume October 12, 2011, 1:29 am

well explained now i got it.

  • Scelo October 19, 2011, 1:15 pm

    its clear when well delivered

  • David Ndurya November 24, 2011, 12:49 pm

Personally, I find it more applicable since the advantages overcome the disadvantages. Thank you for your effort.

  • Shajia Saeed November 28, 2011, 11:32 pm

Your explanation is upto the mark. however, if possible please add critisism for this model too. Thankyou

  • SYLVANUS November 29, 2011, 12:41 pm

It is more easy to understand. The person who sends the message should also be able to interprate. I like it

  • badri December 7, 2011, 8:08 pm

    give examples to clarify it

  • praise December 9, 2011, 1:14 pm

Nice research, but pls, more explanation on interpreter, field of experience, semantic noise and how a sender is also a receiver……….

  • shirshendu debnath December 11, 2011, 7:13 pm

    give examples plz…

  • ALLY MGONZA December 14, 2011, 5:16 pm

    T’s gud in general

  • BUSANDA L BUSANDA December 14, 2011, 6:52 pm

I QUOTE YOU; ‘this model breaks the sender and the receiver’ now my question is ‘ how?’

  • semeni Ramadhani December 27, 2011, 11:19 pm

It is so nice but too brif. elaborate more

  • LUDAN SHAYO December 28, 2011, 11:41 pm

T`s more than gud;but how the model is relevance in todays life?

    atleast,add some disadvantages.

  • chrizle D. January 25, 2012, 3:12 pm

atleast, give example for us to know more

  • Oyeboremi January 29, 2012, 6:11 pm

In this model you did not talk about the immediate feedback

  • elisha mulehane January 31, 2012, 3:23 pm

what a better way you did the explanation, though us juniors in this career it still sound shallow. In Kenya we say bado kidogo maze sijavuta aerial that is -i still havent got home this concept,i wish you did as madam shamsny requested otherwise its on the rail.

  • STEPHEN February 21, 2012, 11:16 am

That is a wonderful work.give us some examples

  • BBUYE BADRU March 10, 2012, 4:39 pm

Really to a greater extent, Aristotle’s model of communication is appreciative in the way that it tries to explain the hindrances that affects communication between two or more people communicating that is to say semantic noise summarized contents, brief, and circulative in nature.Though you need to cite more live examples of which for the applicability of this communication model. Thanks for your contribution….!!!

  • BBUYE BADRU March 10, 2012, 4:43 pm

Aristototle should en light more of his advantages of the model to us
